What should you look for to find the right pillow?
As our sleeping habits are different, the choice of pillow also varies. One can roughly distinguish between two types of “pillow-users”: There are people who prefer to put a large pillow filled with feathers or down together under the head. On the other hand, there are the persons who prefer to lie on pads that are not too high.
However, the pad should have an important function for all: It must provide support for the head, relieve the cervical spine and prevent the head from bending and stretching which may lead to pain in neck muscles. The importance of the pillow in the bed is often underestimated because the choice of the right head pillow contributes significantly to a good and restful sleep. A wrong position of the head often leads to tension in the cervical region, as well as neck pain and headaches. If you wake up in the morning with tensions and pain in the neck and shoulder area, you should check your pillows. In the case of false sleeping habits, the spine is either stretched or hung. Your pillow then may turn into a pillory.
The right pillow for optimal sleeping position
In spite of different personal requirements, a pillow must meet certain criteria:
The main function of the pillow is protecting the cervical spine in its natural S-shape. A good pillow is characterised by great flexibility because the sleeper changes his sleeping position several times at night.
Sensitive to pain as the cervical spine, the neck needs an anatomic and orthopaedic structured surface to carry the burden of the head. Muscles and tendons movement must also be taken into account.
Too hard pillows can not adapt to the individual head shape of the sleeper and hinder the function of the nerves and blood vessels. The air-conditioning properties of a cushion are best not to be underestimated. In the case of prolonged sleep, a pillow must not hinder transpiration in the head and neck area.
The right pillow size
You should generally make sure that your shoulder does not lie on the pillow, but only the head and neck area. Only in this way, your shoulder can sink optimally into the mattress. Orthopaedists, therefore, also advise against large pillows for the reasons mentioned above. We recommend you to sleep a pillow with measuring of 40 x 80cm. The old pillow may be 80 x 80cm. Because the traditional, square pillow format is quite bulky in everyday life, the width is reduced to half.
As a back support for reading or as a large sofa, this size is, however, best suited. Therefore we offer this size for some filling materials. Enjoy the added comfort of a “second pillow”!
The “ideal pillow for everyone” does not exist
Most people turn around at night in different sleeping positions. Therefore, it is important that a pillow adapts to the movements. The sleeping position should be decisively the predominate to determine the selection of the pad:
More than half of all people sleeping predominantly on the side. It is important that the cushion fills the shoulder-neck triangle and holds the head upwards in order to avoid kinking or overstretching of the cervical spine. Therefore, side sleepers should opt for pillows which support the head well or a cervical pillow which is suitable due to its anatomical shape for side sleepers.
Please note that overly soft pillow does not have the necessary bearing capacity to ensure the for the head in the lateral position. A firm pillow made of bamboo would be fine.
In the supine position, the cushion should fill the area between head and shoulder, so as to ensure a pleasant relief. At the same time, however, the pillow should not be too high. Many back sleepers prefer somewhat flatter pillows. A pleasant support in the neck may be just fine.
Stomach sleepers need a flat pillow or even do not need a pillow at all. This is because the cervical vertebrae are heavily strained by the lateral position of the head, and a high cushion would additionally bend the spine. Therefore, we recommend stomach sleepers a down pillow with variable capacity and may be flat in the middle. When the sleeper turns to the side, the pillow can be crumpled in a stronger position. Ultimately, it is crucial that you feel comfortable in your sleeping position.
Apart from the sleeping position, the body figure must also be taken into account:
As a rule of thumb, broad-shouldered men need a higher pillow as petite women. The same is true for heavier people. They often feel more comfortable with a high pillow. This is due to the fact that people with wide shoulders and a higher weight can easily sink into the mattress. To prevent this, the head should be placed slightly higher so that the shoulder does not sink so deep. For this purpose, the neck support pillows are the best.

To start caring for our pillow, the first thing is to buy a cotton cover and protect the pillow with it. This case should be washed weekly, just like the sheets.
